ABOUT

BOB LUCK

Bob Luck is a visual artist and education activist based in Chicago, IL who works in film, multimedia collage, Sculpture, and installation. After relocating to Columbus from Philadelphia he jump-started the Free Skool for Humans initiative, co-founded MINT Collective, and taught collage and film theory workshops across the country. Luck then relocated to Chicago to become Program Director for Roots & Culture Contemporary Art Center.

Luck’s work focuses on decolonizing modern imagery and media, and re-imagining globalization and the self by breaking down diplomatic and emotional borders through collage.

Pop culture artifacts such as film, magazines, advertisements, video games, and music teach us context. It’s producers coolly frame our perception of worlds not physically encountered or directly experienced. Luck pulls this material apart to decontextualize and amplify its flawed representations. Mass produced print media, the artists own drawings, plants and foliage, carefully constructed scenes, sound and color are layered together to explore and affect psychological associations, spiritual exploration, memory loss, decay, and creation. Using collage to dislocate, shift, and restore body and land, image and sound, and figure, and ground. His work challenges the colonial approach to social globalization through mass media.
